Hamburg is a city of water. Locals like to point out that there are more bridges here than in Venice. Generally, everybody takes great pride in the harbour, the Elbe river, and the many town canals. However, living on Hamburg’s waters remains an endeavor for renegades and nonconformists. Apart from the five houseboats in the Eilbek channel – a showpiece among architectural projects – it’s tough to find wharfs that are affordable and legal. In the south of the city, there are a few people to fulfill their dream of a life among the waves – people who are as diverse as their houseboats.
